Left fame behind to do what he was sent to do: preach. Luke 4:43-44 “And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.” (Also Mark 1:38-39 and Matthew 4:23) In this verse Jesus was leaving a group of people who wanted to be with Him. Here Jesus sets an example of staying on task, not getting distracted from what God wanted Him to do. Jesus may have had a desire to do other things or maybe wanted to avoid certain things. It might have been tempting to think of staying where He was welcomed. I can follow Jesus’ example when I am diligent in doing what God wants me to do.

Jesus went to a solitary place to be alone. Luke 4: 42 “And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed with him, that he should not depart from them. (Also Mark 1:35-37) This sounds like parenthood when sometimes you can’t get a moments peace. Here Jesus sets the example; He sought out some time for himself. This was one of my favorite discoveries as I looked at what Jesus did. I can follow Jesus’ example when I make time in my schedule to be alone and find peace.

Jesus heals others and told the devils not to speak. Luke 4:40-41 “Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was the Christ.” (Also Mark 1: 32-34 and Matthew 8: 16-17) Probably this was not the only reason Jesus told them not to speak His name but, I like to think that part of His reason is just the joy of anonymous service. I can be like Jesus when I quietly give service to others.

Jesus healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. Luke 4: 38-39 “And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. (Also Mark 1: 29-31 and Matt 8:14-15) Jesus did what He could to help Simon’s mother-in-law. I can follow Jesus’ example when I do what I can to help others, no matter who they are.

Jesus became famous for his deeds, authority and power. Luke 4: 36-37 “And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! For with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.” (Also Mark 1:27-28) The situation may arise when you or I may become well known for our deeds, authority or power. I can follow Jesus’ example by moving through this situation without losing focus on the work I am responsible to do.

Jesus cast out an unclean spirit and rebuked it for telling who Jesus was. Luke 4: 33-35 “And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.” (Also Mark 1:24-28) In this situation, Jesus is doing his work (helping another) and in the process, something He does not want to happen happens (the evil spirit discloses information). Then, Jesus pointedly disapproves of the evil spirit’s actions. I can follow Jesus’ example and pointedly disapprove of another’s actions when they disrupt the work I need to do. I can be prayerful in determining what my appropriate actions should be.

Jesus taught with the authority he held. Mark 1:21-22 “And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.” Jesus received His authority from His father most likely through personal revelation. Often personal revelation comes to us as an answer to prayer or when we meditate or as inspiration. When I receive personal revelation, I can do what Jesus did by acting upon my personal revelation with authority

Jesus called apostles to help him with his work. Matthew 4:19 – 22 “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.” I love this idea that Jesus asked other people to help Him with His work. Even though there were parts that only He could do, He had others to help him. I imagine that for Him as for me, it was a great comfort to have others to turn to for help.

Jesus walked by the sea. Matthew 4:18 “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.” While Jesus was walking by the sea, He met some people who became important in His life. I can do what Jesus did when I take a walk. You never know what important thing might happen to you while you are on a walk. I find walking to be a type of meditation and an opportunity to listen and talk to God. So do your soul and heart and muscles a favor and go walking like Jesus did.
